FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Better Bay Alliance Enhances Boater Safety with Live Chart

Newport, RI – May 22, 2024 – The Better Bay Alliance (BBA) continues its commitment to enhancing boater safety and awareness with the launch of Live Chart. Following a tragic accident in 2019 that claimed the life of Sandra Tartaglino, a dedicated racing sailor, the BBA was founded by a group of concerned boaters determined to prevent similar incidents.

Live Chart is a revolutionary tool designed to provide real-time information on activities occurring on Rhode Island waters. Accessible to all, this mobile-friendly platform offers an interactive Google Map of RI waters, detailing various on-water activities such as sailboat regattas, poker runs, and kayaking events. Users can easily navigate the map to view specific locations and times of events, ensuring they stay informed and safe while enjoying the bay.

“We believe that knowledge is key to promoting safety on the water,” said Dave Lussier, President of the Better Bay Alliance. “Live Chart empowers boaters with the information they need to make informed decisions and avoid potential hazards.”

In addition to event tracking of activities and events on the waters, Live Chart now integrates Orsted’s cable laying activity schedule for the Revolution Wind offshore wind farm project, providing boaters with crucial information about ongoing construction activities in the area. Looking forward, the next update to Live Chart has plans to incorporate Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for large ships, allowing users to track vessel movements in real-time and mitigate conflicts with planned events.

“We’re excited to introduce these new features to Live Chart,” added Lussier. “By integrating AIS data and cable laying schedules, we will be providing boaters with comprehensive information to enhance safety and promote responsible navigation.”

Live Chart reinforces the BBA’s mission to foster a culture of safety and awareness within the boating community. By encouraging boaters to check their smartphones for real-time updates before heading out on the bay, the BBA aims to prevent accidents and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
